John Lewis launches AR app allowing users to try on over 300 lipstick brands

John Lewis has become the latest retailer to integrate augmented reality (AR) into its retail app, allowing users to “try on” over 300 brands of lipstick.

The department store has launched a new “Try On” feature, which will transport the shopper to a live selfie screen where hundreds of different shades of lipstick can be virtually imposed onto the user’s face.

A raft of leading brands are available to virtually try on, including MAC, Bobbi Brown, YSL, Charlotte Tillbury, BECCA and Lancome, all offering an accurate virtual representation of their products via the app, which will follow the movement of the users lips in real time.

Its new AR app is now available on for download, but is only available on Apple’s iOS 11 or later, included with the iPhone X, XS, XS Max and XR models, alongside the iPad Pro.

“As we look at new ways of weaving innovative technology into the services and experiences we offer our customers, I’m really excited by the possibilities of working with AR,” John Lewis director of digital Sienne Veit said.

“Service is one of the top reasons our customers choose to shop with us and this is the perfect example of us combining the expertise of our Beauty Hall Partners with the very best technology online to give our customers a great experience, however they choose to shop with us.

“Beauty is the perfect space for us to experiment with this technology and we hope our customers have lots of fun using it.”
