John Lewis is set to introduce VR technology to three of its stores, allowing shoppers to virtually visualise furniture in their home before committing to a purchase.
The department store giant is set to begin trialling its Visualise Your Space scheme over the next month, which will let customers input dimensions of their rooms, including windows, doors, walls and paint colours into a virtual space.
They can then either use an iPad to visualise how different John Lewis products would look in augmented reality (AR), or don a headset to fully immerse themselves in the virtual space.
John Lewis will then send them a copy of the room via email, complete with shoppable links to the items of furniture they have selected.

The programme will be rolled out in John Lewis Kingston on June 26, Cambridge on June 28 and Horsham stores in early July.

“However, customers tell us that uncertainty about what new products will look like in their home can make the decision making hard, and in many cases people revert to the safer tones of grey or beige furnishings.
“This technology will enable customers to be braver in their choices, and test technology that architects and interior designers have been using to visualise their designs.”
The technology was developed by US 3D design company Marxent, which has collaborated with major retailers including Macy’s in the past.
