Deliveroo is ceasing all operations in German this Friday leaving the market wide open for Dutch rival Takeaway.com
The Amazon backed delivery giant reportedly has around 1100 riders in five cities across Germany, alongside roughly 100 employees, who it states will receive “adequate compensation”.
Germany has been a particularly difficult market for UK based Deliveroo, with Germans spending around half the amount on food deliveries than the US and UK.

It said that its move reflects its desire to focus on other markets including Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, but didn’t rule out a return to Germany in the future.
This comes amid a period of massive change in the last mile food delivery market, with Amazon making a major investment in Deliveroo in May, following the shut down of its own Amazon Restaurant delivery business.
Meanwhile Just Eat and Deliveroo’s key rival in Germany Takeaway.com have now finalised the terms of their £9 billion merger, creating a new global delivery behemoth which will surpass Uber Eats.
“It has been an honour to serve so many people amazing food from Germany’s many great restaurants,” a Deliveroo spokesperson said.
