Amazon is planning to open a liquor store in San Francisco as it hopes to become to go-to alcohol retailer in California.
The ecommerce giant has applied for a licence to sell beer, wine and spirits from a liquor store next to its warehouse in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighbourhood, according to Mercury News.
Its 200sq ft bricks-and-mortar store would allow customers to buy alcohol directly from the business between 8am and 4pm daily, and carry out online deliveries until midnight.
Should the pending licence be granted, Amazon will be able to carry out Prime Now alcohol deliveries in the area, offering customers delivery times of just two hours.
Though Amazon has offered alcohol through Prime Now in other states since 2015, California law requires all businesses to secure a liquor licence, which requires a physical store, before selling alcohol.
