Amazon’s Echo smart speakers are still the most popular devices on the planet, but Chinese rival Baidu has now overtaken Google.
The smart speaker market grew 55.4 per cent over the second quarter of 2019, seeing 26.1 million devices sold and shipped.
Though Amazon remained at the forefront of the market seeing 6.6 million units shipped throughout the quarter, Google was pipped to second place by Baidu, which sold 4.5 million units compared to Google’s 4.3 million.
This represented a massive 3700 per cent growth in Baidu’s quarterly sales, largely thanks to the Chinese market doubling its quarterly shipments to 12.6 million units.
Meanwhile the US market shrunk slightly (2.4 per cent), selling under half its eastern rival’s total of 6.1 million.
Google and Baidu are not direct rivals as the latter sells exclusively in its home market, while Google sells everywhere but China.
Baidu’s growth has seen it overtake domestic rivals including both Alibaba and Xiaomi, which sold 4.1 million and 2.8 million units respectively.
