Spar is now integrated with the Gander app which sends live price reductions of soon-to-be out of date foods to customers in an effort to reduce waste.

Gander partnered with Henderson Technology to launch the initiative on Friday, providing customers with live updates on items in over 270 Spar convenience stores.

Using Henderson Technology’s EDGEPos system, Gander will post products nearing their sell-by-date as soon as they are stickered in store and will update its list as items are sold in real-time.

Customers can also track certain products in the app, receiving updates as and when the particular items are reduced to clear, and inform them how many of the discounted item is left in store.

“The store teams are really engaged with it and the shoppers are getting it,” Henderson Technology’s chief executive Darren Nickels said.

“I know Gander is in discussions with many others to do this and I know many are watching to see how this goes. We are happy to be leading the way on it but we would like to see this in every outlet across the UK. Waste reduction is a big driver for shoppers.

“Yes, we have the kudos of doing it first and leading the industry and that’s great and we’re really happy about that, but if it is to be successful, it has to become a standard way of shopping across all outlets because that’s how shoppers will come back to it again.”

The app is currently live in stores operating under the Spar, Eurospar, Vivo, Vivoxtra, Calver, Sleaford, Nefyn, and Abersoch brands across the UK and is available for download on iOS and Android.
