Starbucks customers in China can now order coffee and food for home delivery using Alibaba’s smart speaker.
Anyone with a Tmall Genie smart speaker can now make Starbucks orders using their voice, and have their coffee delivered to their door within just 30 minutes with the ability to track their order in real time.
Membership accounts can also be connected to the Genie smart speaker allowing customers to earn Star rewards with every purchase, while Alibaba’s artificial intelligence unit plans to introduce personalised recommendations based on previous orders in the near future.
To mark the partnership the pair have released an exclusive Starbucks themed Tmall Genie device complete with a “Bearista”, available for purchase on its flagship store on Alibaba’s Tmall marketplace.
Users can play music from a curated Starbucks playlist by saying “play some Starbucks music”.

“We’re excited to introduce an even more diverse and enriched experience on our platform through Starbucks voice-ordering and provide a direct benefit to Chinese consumers within their daily routine,” Alibaba’s AI labs’ general manager Miffy Chen said.
Starbucks China’s vice president and general manager of the digital ventures division Molly Liu, said the new smart speaker marks a new era of digital customer engagement for Starbucks.
“We are focused on ensuring that Starbucks voice-ordering is truly personal, and we look forward to offering our customers more convenient moments and new opportunities to engage with Starbucks on a single integrated platform as they move throughout the day,” she added.
