Schuh has become the latest retailer to roll out a recycling initiative as part of its “ongoing commitment to operate sustainably”.
“Sell Your Shoes”, the footwear retailers new circular fashion programme, will see customers receive a £5 voucher for every “wearable” pair of shoes they trade in.
Recyclatex, a textile recycling firm which has partnered with Schuh for the programme, will collect donations every week from all of the retailer’s 130 stores across the UK and Ireland.
According to the company, 98 per cent of all components and materials donated will be fully recycled, and for every tonne of recycled material collected Recyclatex make a payment to Schuh, who will donate the funds to its chosen charity World Land Trust.
“As a fashion retailer, we recognise the importance of protecting the environment and are on a mission to proactively find new ways to operate sustainably,” Schuh’s managing director Colin Temple said.
“We are delighted to roll out Sell Your Soles in partnership with Recyclatex, giving customers across all regions an accessible way to recycle their end of life shoes with confidence.”
This comes as fashion retailers across the country begin integrating sustainable initiatives into their operations.
H&M recently announced the launch of a rental service, following in the footsteps of Urban Outfitters, Bloomingdales and Banana Republic, following its acquisition of resale platform Sellpy.
Zalando also recently announced its pledge to become “carbon neutral” over the next five years, while Adidas launched a similar trade-in scheme called “Infinite Play” last month.
