Pinterest has become the latest online platform to launch an augmented reality (AR) virtual lipstick “try on” app.
Shoppers using the Pinterest mobile app can now open the open the camera in search and select “try on”, enabling them to see a virtual photo-quality image of themselves wearing a wide range of lipsticks from different brands.
The “try on” button also appear when browsing compatible products, as well as in search when related terms like “red lips” appear.
Furthermore, Pinterest has integrated its new AR software with its skin tone range feature, allowing users to see similar lip shades on skin tones like theirs.
The new feature, currently available in on iOS and Android in the US, also lets users take snapshots of their virtual try on, the pin the post and shop it later.
Lipsticks from leading beauty brands including Estée Lauder, Sephora, BareMinerals, Neutrogena, NYX Professional Makeup, YSL Beauté, Lancôme, and Urban Decay will be available to try on.
Major retailers including John Lewis and Superdrug also offer similar AR makeup try on features in their apps, and many brands are also making use of the technology via their YouTube channels.
