John Lewis is launching a new augmented reality feature to its iOS app allowing shoppers to virtually place sofas in their home before purchase.
‘Virtual Sofa’ is set to be tested with over 123 of John Lewis’ bestselling sofas and armchairs enabling customers to “check scale and colour in their home using the AR function in the app” in the coming weeks.
While browsing products customers can tap the ‘View In Your Room’ button which will open their smartphones camera and prompt them to scan their room for dimensions.
Once an accurate 3D model has been created shoppers can choose from a range of sofas, armchairs and colour swatches to virtually place in their home.
“Buying a new sofa or armchair is a very considered purchase as it’s something we tend to have for a long time,” John Lewis’ head of online product and customer experience Sean O’Connor said.
“From talking to our customers we know that many of them go through as many as 13 different
stages before making their final choice of sofa; so we wanted to simplify this process for them.
“Customers can now browse styles on our website, test comfort in one of our shops, and check
scale and colour in their home using the AR function in the app. We know this will not only save a
lot of time but also offer peace of mind that their new sofa will look great in their home.”
This follows the launch of its ‘Virtual Lipstick’ feature and its ‘Visualise Your Space’ initiative in a number of stores last year.
The latter invites customers at its Cambridge, Horsham, Kingston and Peterborough stores to don virtual reality (VR) headset and enter a virtual room matching the dimensions of one in their home and add John Lewis products from its home collection.
