Southend-on-Sea has the highest level of contactless transactions in the country, according to new data from Paymentsense.
The UK’s top 10 cashless locations have been determined by the payment provider which analysed over 305 million transactions recorded over 80,000 business throughout 2019.
With 78 per cent of transactions being made via contactless transaction Southend-on-Sea took the top spot in 2019, taking the crown from Bristol.
“For non-UK visitors flying into Southend to visit London, they will want to avoid carrying around cash in different currencies, especially when it is now so convenient to pay without exchange fees on a contactless card,” Paymentsense’s head of digital Yanis Zisis said.
“Businesses operating in regions which have a high percentage of tourists or overseas visitors will understand that offering customers the opportunity to pay on a card, at pace, will often make or break a sale, especially when competition is so high.”
Next on the list was London’s Twickenham, while East London was the capitals most tapped region with 75 per cent of all transactions made contactlessly.

All of the top 10 most cashless locations were situated in the South of the country, while the only northern city to make it into the top 20 was Leeds.
Throughout 2019 contactless payments rose eight per cent year-on-year, increasing from 62 per cent of all card payments to 70 per cent.
