Asos to digitize returns saving 320,000kg of paper per year

Asos is due to save the equivalent of 320,000kg of paper by doing away with paper returns forms altogether.

The online fashion retailer is “officially switching over to online returns”, which it says will save it 64 million paper returns inserts every year.

It goes on to point out that this is the equivalent of 8450 trees, or the weight of three blue whales or 55 elephants.

Customers can now “create returns” via the “my orders” page on its website an app, then simply select their item from a menu and drop off their returns.

“And there’s more to come,” Asos said.

“In 2019, we signed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, which brings together businesses and governments across the world to tackle plastic waste,” it adds.

“We’ve made a ton of commitments to support that project, like promising to increase the amount of recycled material in our mailing bags up to 100% (from 65%), increase our use of ‘post-consumer waste’ (think recycling old Asos bags into new ones), and half the amount of packaging we currently use — watch this space for updates, people.”

GlobalData’s retail analyst Hannah Richards added: “Another retailer saying goodbye to paper returns slips in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, with the added bonus of reducing costs…or is it the other way around?”
