Amazon has closed its grocery delivery service Prime Pantry temporarily due to “high order volumes” as it becomes that latest retailer to struggle to meet demand.
Prime Pantry posted a notice to US customers yesterday stating that it was “not accepting new orders at this time” as it focused on competing its hefty backlog of orders and replenishing stocks.
Amazon said it would “update customers when we can take new orders” but revealed no specifics about when this might be.
Its Prime now and Amazon Fresh delivery services have also been put under strain thanks to the unprecedented number of people turning online to buy basic food and supplies.
Delivery slots for both these services have remained scarce and unavailable for days in some areas, while Amazon Prime Now has even added a warning notice on its site for shoppers in areas with limited delivery availability.
This comes after Amazon announced earlier this week that it was banning sellers in the UK and US from sending any non-essential items to its warehouses from April 5.
‘Fulfilled by Amazon’, the retailer’s flagship service which enables third-party sellers to utilise Amazon’s warehouse storage space and delivery network, is being forced to prioritise essential products in order to keep up with increasing demand.
On Monday Amazon announced it would hire 100,000 extra staff in full and part-time positions across the US to meet demand in its fulfilment centres.
Writing in a company blog post Amazon’s senior vice president Dave Clark explained that the business would “meet the surge in demand from people relying on Amazon’s service during this stressful time, particularly those most vulnerable to being out in public.”
It added that it would invest $350 million globally to increase pay by $2 per hour in the US and £2 per hour in the UK.
