Etsy rallies sellers to “start making face masks” as demand skyrockets

Etsy has called on all its sellers to “start making face masks” in an unprecedented effort to meet demand.

The online marketplace, which specialises in craft and artisanal products made by its sellers, has rallied its users to begin creating face masks at home as search volumes skyrocket.

According to a blog post published yesterday, buyers searched for face masks on Etsy an average of nine times per second over the last week, totalling over two-million searches.

Etsy’s chief executive Josh Silverman added that the Etsy community was “uniquely positioned to address this crucial need during a global health crisis”.

“Our sellers–unencumbered by supply chains and manufacturing contracts–have a unique ability to quickly shift their product offerings to meet emerging trends and new buyer demand…

“We hope that increasing the availability of fabric, non-medical grade face masks from Etsy sellers will allow more medical and surgical masks to reach the people who need them most: front-line healthcare workers.”

Hundreds of thousands of face masks have now been sold by over 20,000 sellers on Etsy in the last two weeks as merchants answered the call in their droves.

This comes as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) instructed all US citizens to wear a face mask whenever outside of their home.
