Online sex doll, lingerie and sex toy sales skyrocket during lockdown

Online sales of sex dolls, sex toys and lingerie have skyrocketed during lockdown as shoppers stuck at home look for new ways to entertain themselves.

Missguided reported this week that its lingerie sales had spiked a whopping 300 per cent since lockdown was imposed on March 23.

Sales of black bralettes have jumped 18 per cent across the UK since the start of lockdown, according to the online fashion retailer, while high wasted pants saw a sales rise of 15 per cent.

Meanwhile Sex Doll Genie, which claims to be the largest sex doll retailers in the world, has seen a “record number of orders during the coronavirus pandemic”.

The retailer, which sells a range of over 2600 premium made-to-order sex dolls, said it saw a 51.6 per cent increase in orders from single men in February and March, rising a further 33.2 per cent in April.

“We have lots of products in stock but we can’t work fast enough to keep up with demand,” Sex Doll Genie’s co-founder Janet Stevenson said.

“We are hiring as quickly as we can and have created several new roles in fulfilment management and customer support in both the US and Europe.”

In April New Zealand’s Adult Toy Megastore said it saw a tripling of sex toy sales in the 48 hours before lockdown was officially imposed on March 25.

The retailer added that it had seen subsequent spikes in sales in the following weeks, each coinciding with major news announcements about the pandemic.

Despite this Durex owner Reckitt Benckiser said in late August that condom sales had plummeted since lockdown began, citing the fact that people were having less sex because of social distancing measures.

The company’s chief executive Laxman Narasimhan said: “What you see is this virus is having a toll on the number of intimate occasions in the UK.”

He added that not only were young people having less hookups, but increased anxiety had also led to less sex between established couples.
