Amazon sees “max police strength” pepper spray become best-seller as protests continue

Amazon has seen a spike in sales of “max police strength” pepper spray as the riots sweeping the country turn shopper’s attention away from COVID-19 and towards self-defense.

A canister of Sabre brand pepper spray, advertised as “max police strength”, has become the top-selling product in Amazon’s “Sports & Outdoors” category in the US, according to Marketplace Pulse.

This was helped by protestors swapping tips about self-defense products on Twitter, with many linking to Amazon products.

While other pepper spray products, stun guns and protective masks were all also listed in the top 100 best selling items, products to express solidarity with the protests also experienced a boon.

Black Lives Matter merchandise shot up the rankings, alongside t-shirts with the slogan “I can’t breathe”.

Educational books on racial justice also became top sellers, including titles White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism, How to Be an Antiracist and We’re Different, We’re the Same all listed in the top ten in Amazon’s books category.

It follows widespread protests across the US over the killing of George Floyd while in police custody.

While one officer Derek Chavin, who was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck while repeatedly being told that he “can’t breath”, has been charged with manslaughter, the demonstrations continue to rage.

US President Donald Trump has now threatened to deploy the military to combat protestors, many of which descended on the White House yesterday.
