Etsy launches AR feature letting users virtually experience over 5m paintings

Etsy has launched a new augmented reality (AR) app allowing shoppers to virtually preview over 5 million paintings, photographs and prints in their homes.

The new app allows users to take any of the items in its “Art and Collectibles” category and virtually place them on walls in their home to experience what they’d look like physically.

If prints are available in different sizes, the app will allow users to switch between them and Etsy says it is working on extending the service to other categories.

The beta is currently only available on iPhones and iPads, but the online marketplace says it is working to launch its service on android as soon as possible.

“At Etsy, our product and engineering teams are always experimenting to help buyers shop our unique listings with confidence, and launching this feature is an exciting first step in implementing augmented reality to create a more visual shopping experience,” the brand said.

“Our beta launch starts with prints, photography and portraits, and we’re excited to collect feedback from our community as we work to expand into other categories.”
