Amazon is bringing its new “Climate Pledge Friendly” badge to the UK following the successful roll out of its new green initiative in the US last month.
Thousands of products in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy sold on Amazon’s platform will now be awarded Climate Pledge Friendly badges, helping environmentally conscious users shop smarter.
These labels signify that a product has at least one of 18 independently awarded sustainability certifications from organisations like Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and the Forest Stewardship Council.
The badge could also mean the product has been awarded Amazon’s own “Compact by Design” certificate, which is given to products that “remove excess air and water” to reduce the carbon footprint of delivery and packaging.
Currently the majority of items given the Climate Pledge Friendly badge have been awarded Amazon’s own Compact by Design certificate, numbering “over 7000” compared to just over 5000 for all of the remaining certificates combined.
Shoppers will also soon be able to access a dedicated section of Amazon featuring only products awarded certificates.
“Climate Pledge Friendly is a simple way for our customers to discover more sustainable products that help preserve the natural world,” Amazon’s UK boss Doug Gurr said.
“With 18 external certification programmes and our own new Compact by Design certification, we’re incentivising selling partners to create sustainable products that help protect the planet for future generations.”
