Sainsbury’s has announced plans to dramatically expand its partnership with Deliveroo offering rapid delivery from over 100 UK stores.
The UK’s second largest supermarket has signed a new two-year contract with Deliveroo, which it first launched a trial partnership with back in 2019, which will see it offer a 20-minute delivery service to around 30 per cent of the UK.
The pair will now offer rapid delivery on over 1000 items from 22 new stores in London, alongside new stores in Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, Aberdeen and York.
Sainsbury’s became one of many UK grocers to enlist the help of Deliveroo this year to quickly expand its online delivery capacity in the wake of successive lockdowns.
In October, it announced plans to expand its initial trial to 10 stores across London, offering hundreds of items from both its own and branded ranges, amid a scramble to expand capacity in time for Christmas.
“Working with Deliveroo has helped us offer home grocery deliveries to even more customers, bringing them a super-fast service when they need something in a hurry,” Sainsbury’s director of ecommerce Nigel Blunt said.

“We know how much Sainsbury’s customers value being able to shop for food as quickly and conveniently as possible and we’re delighted to be able to expand this service further.”
Deliveroo has seen a dramatic rise in the number of grocery outlets turning to its service to expand their delivery capabilities during lockdown.
Its success over 2020 encouraged it to launch an initial public offering (IPO) last month, which although missed expectations still marked one of London’s biggest listings in a decade.
Deliveroo’s chief marketplace officer Eric French added: “We are delighted to announce this expansion of our new partnership with Sainsbury’s, which has proved so popular with customers.
“Deliveroo’s on-demand grocery partnerships have proven vital for so many people during the pandemic, allowing families to get the food and household items they need and want quickly. We are excited to continue expanding this partnership in the weeks ahead and offer Sainsbury’s amazing products to even more customers across the UK.”
