Wilko plans to roll out autonomous deliveries to customers by 2023

Wilko has invested £3 million in UK autonomous delivery company, StreetDrone in order to accelerate the company’s development.

The retailer is hoping that its investment will bring autonomous deliveries to its customers by the end of 2023.

“Autonomous vehicles are the future of automated logistics, and StreetDrone is undoubtedly one of the key players that will lead the way in making this technology viable,” Wilko chief executive Jerome Saint-Marc said.

“It has gone from strength to strength over the last four years and is one of the companies that’s putting the UK on the map in developing this type of game-changing technology.”

Saint-Marc believes that investment in companies like StreetDrone will bring transformative change for hard working families.

“Ultimately, it has the potential to reduce costs for customers when deployed in the retail sector. We look forward to supporting them on this journey.”

StreetDrone chief executive Mike Potts added: “We are delighted to have the support of a major UK retailer. wilko will help us realise our aim of bringing autonomous last mile services to UK and European roads, to the benefit of both retailers and consumers.”

Currently Wilko offers its customers a click-and-collect service or delivery via courier however the new investment will replace the latter option, using StreetDrone’s first vehicle “Pix-e” instead.

StreetDrone’s objective with the Pix-e is to cut last-mile delivery carbon footprints.
