Sainsbury’s has officially scrapped its ‘Nectar Double Up’ promotion amid the latest major shake up of its Nectar points rewards system.

Sainsbury’s Double Up events, which have until now usually taken place in October, doubled the value of customers’ Nectar points temporarily.

Usually, shoppers receive one Nectar point for every pound spent in Sainsbury’s which they are then able to exchange for vouchers worth the equivalent of half a penny per point.

Following reports from blog Skint Dad that the UK’s second-largest supermarket was scrapping the offer this year, Sainsbury’s confirmed the move telling The Sun: “Fewer customers have been using Double Up over the last few years and so it’s only benefitted a small minority of our customers.

“We know some people will be disappointed to see it go, but we hope more customers will be able to take advantage of our new My Nectar Prices offer.

“This gives customers access to lower prices and personalised offers year-round.”

It comes amid a wider shakeup of Sainsbury’s popular Nectar points system, with Sainsbury’s launching My Nectar Prices earlier this month.

The new scheme offers shoppers personalised offers on the products they buy most, which Sainsbury’s says could save them up to £200 a year.

It has also expanded the locations and items where you can earn Nectar points, allowing shoppers to earn on purchases of fruit and veg for the first time, as well as at Argos.

The move has proven unpopular with many shoppers, 18 million of which currently use its Nectar scheme.
