Sainsbury’s is offering thousands of delivery drivers a potential bonus of £500 to incentivise people to join the workforce over the Christmas period.
The supermarket chain is seeking around 22,000 workers in total to ease the strain put on the UK’s supply chain, marking the company’s biggest ever festive recruitment drive.
Sainsbury’s said that there will be 14,500 in-store roles, 4,500 openings in logistics and 3,000 delivery driver roles.
The company said that it is introducing the incentive scheme to recruit more Argos and grocery online delivery drivers amid the UK’s well documented HGV driver shortage.
Both new and existing drivers could earn up to additional £500 for doing shifts over the busy Christmas period.
Any driver who works 36.5 hours per week throughout the eight week period from November 7 to January 1 will receive a one off bonus of £500 in January.
Payments however will be pro-rated depending on the number of hours worked by the driver.
“We’re going all out to help our customers celebrate and make sure they have a great Christmas this year,” Sainsbury’s retail and digital director Clo Moriarty.
“By recruiting 22,000 temporary Sainsbury’s and Argos colleagues on an attractive pay package, incentivising online drivers and offering additional hours to existing colleagues over the festive season, we will deliver what our customers want – great food and fantastic service,” Moriarty added.
