Amazon Fresh has opened two more locations in Hounslow and Aldgate East, bringing seamless, checkout-free shopping to even more customers.
The launch of the two locations takes the number of store locations in the UK to 12, after the ecommerce giant’s other stores located in Ealing, Wembley Park, Camden, White City, Canary Wharf, Dalston, East Sheen, Islington, Richmond and Holborn, walking distance from both Tesco and Sainsbury’s autonomous supermarkets.
The store will utilise the company’s innovative ‘Just Walk Out’ (JWO) technology which detects when items have been taken off or replaced back on the shelf and charges customers after they leave the store via their Amazon accounts, without the need to visit a checkout.
Customers will receive a digital receipt through their email once they have left the shop.
Amazon has picked up the pace of its bricks-and-mortar offerings in the UK in the last two months, opening a number of Amazon Fresh stores and Amazon 4-star locations, all in London, the latest of which located in Westfield.
The increased rollout of its stores in the UK comes after the company managed to cut the cost of its autonomous stores by 96 per cent since the first opening in the US in 2017.
The estimated operating cost of a 1,000 square-foot cashierless location has dropped to just $159,000 per store, each year.
This marks a 96 per cent decrease from the eye-watering $4 million it cost to run the store for a year in December 2017.
