Melania Trump voices support for Bitcoin after NFT platform launch

Melania Trump has announced her support for Bitcoin during the 13th anniversary of its launch, after recently launching her own non-fungible token (NFT) project.

In a tweet, Melania acknowledged that Bitcoin had surpassed $1 trillion (£742.3bn) in market value.

“It is widely reported that Bitcoin’s market cap exceeds USD$1 Trillion.  Today marks the 13th anniversary of the Bitcoin Genesis Block. Happy Anniversary, #SatoshiNakamoto #MelaniaNFT,” she said.

Melania’s tweet follows recent news that Bitcoin’s mining hashrate – a metric measuring the total computational power used to process transactions – hit an all-time high ahead of the cryptocurrency’s 13th anniversary over the weekend.

Many in the cryptocurrency community, including Morgan Creek Digital co-founder of Anthony Pompliano, suggested that Mrs. Trump could be a “Bitcoiner”.

The former first lady’s apparent backing of Bitcoin comes after the launch of her first NFT, a watercolour painting of her “cobalt blue eyes” called “Melania’s Vision”. The NFT’s were sold in exchange for Solana cryptocurrency.

Melania plans to release NFT’s “in regular intervals” on her website and a portion of the proceeds will go towards children in the foster care system, although it is not clear what percentage of the proceeds this will be.

The news comes despite former President Donald Trump’s past remarks about Bitcoin, calling it a “scam”, insisting it is based on “thin air” while advocating that the dollar should remain the “currency of the world.”
