Shein and Shopee were the most downloaded shopping apps in 2021 worldwide, beating out Amazon, according to a new report from Apptopia.
Both online retailers saw significant download growth, with Shein growing by 70% and Singapore based app Shopee by 46%. In third place was Indian social e-commerce company Meesho, which saw rapid growth of 744%.
Despite having the most worldwide app installs last year, Amazon came in fourth place, with downloads falling by 12%.
However, the ecommerce giant is still first in Apptopia’s US 2021 rankings for shopping app installs.
The news comes as Shein recently launched a new $10 million sustainability and social impact fund.
The company described the fund as a new, multi-year commitment to “support global non-profit organizations focused on empowering entrepreneurs, supporting underserved communities, ensuring animal health and welfare, and promoting recycling and the circular economy.”
The fund announcement came after Shein was accused of widespread worker exploitation including 75 hour work weeks, fire building safety hazards and lack of compliance with employment law, according to an investigation by Private Eye.
