Asda has announced it is trialling automated age verification software from Yoti on its self-checkout till points, becoming the first grocer to do so.
Two of Asda‘s Pudsey and Stevenage stores will be the first to pilot the scheme and will allow customers to use privacy preserving age estimation technology when purchasing alcohol by way of a camera in the self-checkout screen to accurately estimate a customer’s age.
The scheme is part of a Home Office trial to allow the testing of technology in the workplace to see if it can assist with the retail sale of age-restricted goods.
Shoppers need to simply look at the camera to verify their age before completing their purchase.
If the tech deems them to be under the age of 25 then they will be able to prove their age through the Yoti or PostOffice EasyID apps.
Any customers who does not wish to use the digital system at the checkout will still have the option to show and Asda colleague their ID.
The trial will run until the end of May and and will only be used for the purchase of alcohol products.
Asda is also trialling another piece of technology which will help the store detect the number of people in the shop to see whether it needs to open more checkouts during peak times.
“We know how time pressed some of our customers are, so we always want to make things quicker and easier for them when they shop with us,” Asda senior director of retail innovation Geri Hebberd said.
“We are excited to be the first retailer in the UK to test this new technology and are looking forward to seeing what our customers think of the trial.
“The use of this software will enable colleagues to focus on serving customers and make sure they have an excellent experience whilst in store.”
Yoti chief executive Robin Tombs added: “Waiting for age approval at the self-checkout is sometimes frustrating for shoppers, but Asda customers in Pudsey and Stevenage will now be able to prove their age in seconds without the wait using Yoti Facial Age Estimation or the free Yoti ID app.
