Why China is at loggerheads with the retail sector

China has been accused of a number of human rights abuses against its population of Uighur muslims in its western region of Xinjiang. This has prompted a number of the world’s largest retailers to condemn the alleged actions and withdraw from using materials made from the region.

However, Beijing has hit back and has since 2020, been at loggerheads with the retail sector. Charged explains how and why below.
