Asos names Wei Gao as non-executive director

Online fashion retailer Asos has appointed former Amazon exec Wei Gao as a non-executive director, effective from 1 February 2023.

Gao was previously chief operating officer at the online hosting platform Hopin and before that spent 16 years at Amazon, where her roles included vice president of grocery tech, product and supply chain, and technical advisor to the chief executive.

“On behalf of the board, I want to welcome Wei to Asos,” Asos chairman Jørgen Lindemann said.

“Wei joins us with a depth of relevant industry knowledge across international ecommerce. The board will greatly benefit from Wei´s expertise, and we look forward to working closely with her.”

In October, Asos announced a cost-cutting plan, alongside a pre-tax loss of £32 million, as it continues to grapple with rising energy and staffing costs, amid the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Over the past year, Asos’s share price has plummeted more than 80%, having issued a profit warning and failing to maintain the positive gains it made during the pandemic.

The retailer’s new chief executive José Antonio Ramos Calamonte has pledged to “refresh the culture” at the company, revealing his 12-month turnaround plan, which will focus on both a number of “decisive, short-term operational measures to simplify the business, alongside steps to unlock longer-term sustainable growth.”

The Asos board also confirmed that Mai Fyfield has been appointed as chair of the remuneration committee and will take up her new role starting 1 January 2023.
