Snapchat launches AI chatbot powered by ChatGPT

Snapchat has launched its own AI chatbot, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT but customised for Snap’s flagship company.

The feature, which Snap has coined ‘My AI’, is only available as an experimental feature for Snapchat+ subscribers, rolling out this week.

“My AI can recommend birthday gift ideas for your BFF, plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, suggest a recipe for dinner, or even write a haiku about cheese for your cheddar-obsessed pal,” the social media firm said in the release.

Users will also be able to name their AI and customise the wallpaper for your chat.

The company did warn that its model is prone to ‘hallucinations,’ which is when AI gives responses that are not in line with its training data, and often wrong.

It went on to warn of its model’s ‘many deficiencies’ even apologied in advance.

Users were also asked not to “share any secrets with My AI” as all their conversations will be stored and “may be reviewed to improve the product experience”.

“While My AI is designed to avoid biased, incorrect, harmful, or misleading information, mistakes may occur,” it said.

To submit feedback on any problematic answers by the chatbot, users can press and hold on any message.

The news comes as Snap rival Meta also announced it was dedicating a team of employees to a new generative AI unit.
